any ideas on what the start date represents?

its after March 1, 2010, 2:33 pm - Valvetime - Portal update 1

How about the BBS shutting down at the end of the countdown? Especially with all those extinction messages... If that happened, people would die here :]--212.234.33.50 09:09, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Projected Completion

Progress 20100303 1006.png

Fitted function:

37.1126 + 0.842585 x

Finish Time (March 5th):

10.1525 hours

Note: Weighting all the points or removing points before the backstep gives a projection of 11AM.

My projection

Using the latest data, I got linear function f(x) = 0,01536891x + 25,1721718 It puts the finish time at approximately 7:07 AM on Friday - If this was linear. Actually recent points come quite close, but there was a slight anomaly at 6:38 PM on Wednesday; the graph has 'a pothole' in that point. This might be caused by malformed user reported data though.

EDIT: 11:10AM progress update pushed time to apr. 7:26AM.

Backwards

Progress bars can move backwards if the finish time is recalculated and determined to be farther in the future than originally estimated. Translation: Valve pushed back the time for whatever it is they intend to do when the bar fills.

Anyone who has used Microsoft Windows XP's copy dialog for large numbers of files can see this in action.192.91.172.42 15:41, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Its still on 73. So why is it pushed back? --Ywa 15:48, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
